Penny Ombre Art - Nat from DoodleCraft is my Guest

Unlike most of my "Blog Friends",
I've actually met "Nat" from DoodleCraft in person.

We were both attending a blogging get-together.
She showed up looking so adorable
prepared with beautiful home-made CHOCOLATE favors.
I said to myself, "Wow, this girl is a keeper!".
{Plus, she's automatically a kindred spirit because she loves Star Wars, Lord of the Rings,
& all those fun, nerdy movies!}

I've been enjoying her blog ever since.

Nat recently created this eye-catching
"Pennies From Heaven" Ombre Art
I'm so taken with it & I'm pleased to have Natalie as a guest
to show you how to make your own. Here's Nat:
I am Natalie Shaw from doodlecraft!
Pretty sure my love of crafting was prenatal.  My mom was crafty and fun, and I've inherited that from her...along with her nose.  I've been blogging for just over a year now and love the DIY blog world, I just soak up ideas like a sponge!  My wonderful and funny husband and my 3 kids are my partners in crime.  We homeschool and all do projects together.  We love parties, decorations, Halloween, furniture building and redo's...
Some simple favorites have been:

Tutorial for Penny Ombre Art

This is a  fun summer-time science experiment to do with kids!

You probably already have most of what you will need:

A frame
Burlap or canvas as backing
Pennies
Vinegar and salt
Start with the frame.
(I spray painted my gold frame with a little
 copper and teal...just for fun!)
Wrap burlap on the backboard, remove the glass
and hot glue it in the frame.
See how many pennies fit in the space.

96 for me.

(my 4th grader did the math)

Get a bunch of pennies!
They are naturally a wide range of colors...
Sort out the brightest, brownest,
blackest, whitest and teal-est ones.

Now, the science.
Take some mid-range colored pennies
and put them in a glass dish.

Add 1/4 cup white vinegar and 1 teaspoon of salt.
Immediately they will brighten and become shiny.
Let them soak about 5-10 minutes.
Pull them out and set them on a plastic plate...
don't dry them off...
Over the next 2 hours they become slimy looking
and turn very bright turquoise--or verdigris as it is called.

Our pennies dried over night.
Arranged them on the burlap.
I let the kids decide which were brighter and didn't
care too much if they weren't exactly so.
Then hot glue them onto the burlap!
Picture perfect!
Love it!
Hope you all enjoyed Natalie's project as much as I did.
Have you ever made anything with pennies?
