New Life to a Thrift Store Chair

Well, it's finished.
But I barely survived it!
Ha!

My fingers are sore, by back hurts, &
I don't think I'll quit my day job for a career
in upholstery!  :D

I've been talking about how I procrastinated
starting this project--
that's because I knew it was going to be tough.
This chair was done a little strangely to begin with.

This is what it looked like when I found it at the
thrift store for $8.
The price was right, but I was worried about
the way it was upholstered.

They say 90% of what we worry about never
happens. This was the other 10% that does!

But it was really sturdy &
I thought it had potential, so I brought it home.

Of course, the first step is to remove the dirty,
old fabric.

I wanted to save and re-use the nail-head trim.
A fork had to be sacrificed though.

I lightly sanded the wood.

Then I spray primed & spray painted the wood.
Here it is naked!

I made SO many mistakes, but I learned a lot.
I wish I would have bought more fabric.
I thought 2 yards (55" wide) would be ample, but it wasn't.

It would look more professional if
a medallion was centered on the seat
and on the back cushion.
But, I didn't have enough fabric to make it possible
& I was too cheap to buy more.

Also, real nail-head trim is really hard
to use!

Here's the conversation I had with my son:

Darling Son: "Are you finished with your chair?"

Me: "Yes, but don't look too closely--there are lots
of mistakes!"

Darling Son: "Yeah, your nail-head trim isn't
equally spaced . . ."

Me: "Oh yeah PUNK" "Yes, sweetheart, that
trim is really hard to get right."

I also learned that
adorable fabric is SO hard to find.
WHERE is it???
I love Home Goods, but they were cleaned out.

Anywho . . .
I do love the fabric.
($15 a yard at Hancock Fabrics)
Hopefully no one will look too
closely at the craftsmanship.

  5. I so enjoyed this and read every word. Thank you for stopping by and commenting on my lazy Susan. You feel like you could never do the painting. Well this kind of project terrifies me but your terrific pictures and commentary make me want to try it someday. Im impressed you found a chair for 8 dollars. Our Goodwills price things much higher. ;((. I loved the fabric you chose and the nail heads, well they give it character and make for a very good story :0

  7. WEll, I THINK IT TURNED OUT GREAT. Love the new fabric on it.
I can strip furniture and paint it, but upholstering it would be like a death sentence for me.

  8. It looks great! I have yet to tackle upholstery, but I might give a try soon if it will look this good in the end!

  9. You did a fabulous job. I love the orange and white. I did a chair like this a couple of years ago and it almost did me in. They are a lot more difficult than they look!

  10. I think you did a wonderful job on your chair and I love the fabric. I have two very similar chairs to recover. I pulled all the fabric off last December and just finished one of the chairs last week. I sympathize with your little sore fingers and all. :) Looks wonderful.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  11. Michelle,
I love the fabric! So fun and fresh. I asked an Interior designer the other day what how to keep your upholstered fabric clean...i have little kids...she said to use 100% polyester. Just thought i would share it with you to.

  14. I love it. What makes your post even more awesome is that you outlined your mistakes. It makes it real, it helps the reader know how to avoid those mistakes, and is fun. I can relate to the sore back and all after projects. I've been painting art for three days and am so sore from the awkward positions I have to get in. But, hopefully it's all worth it. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment about my big risk - the chair!

  17. It looks so awesome! And I think your nail head trim looks great....we're always harder on ourselves than we need be :-) I'm with you about finding cute fabric....where is it?! I go in to Joannes, and out of the hundreds of fabrics they have, I can't find a single one, unless of course I want to pay $45 a yard and/or special order it. No thanks...!
